モンクはバップ勃興期からその運動に関わりを持ってきました。正式なレコーディングの機会にはなかなか恵まれませんでした。1944年のホーキンス・カルテット盤を除いては、前出クリスチャンとの共演を含む1941年の私家盤、ガレスピー楽団の1946年の放送録音があるのみです。彼のレコード面での成功は50年代半ばからになります。彼にいち早く注目し、リーダー吹き込みをさせたのがブルーノートでした。それらを録音順に整理したのがこのシリーズです。Vol.1には1947年10月のセクステットとトリオ、Vol.2には1947年11月のクインテットと1948年7月のカルテット録音が収録されています。モンクのオルジナル曲の初演盤としても興味深いです。
